David Shannon

As a Kindergarten teacher I have several favorite authors. We read multiple books every single day in my classroom. It is difficult to pick just one author that I love. However, I decided to focus on one author for today's blog post.

I thought I owned all of David Shannon's books, until I was trying to find images online. I guess there are a few more books I need to purchase this fall to add to my collection. My kindergarten kiddos just love his books. Most of his stories are pretty comical, which is probably why my students love his books. I like that they aren't too long so they keep their attention throughout the entire book. My favorite part of his books are the illustrations, he is an amazing artist.  If you don't teach younger grades and have never read a David Shannon book, I highly recommend that you check some of them out. Here are some of his books:

These two pirate books are actually written by Melinda Long but David Shannon was the illustrator.

    1. Thanks! I didn't even realize that I haven't read them to my own daughter until I wrote this post. All of my books are in my classroom. I might have to order some this fall to read to her.

  2. Oh great, now I need to up my Amazon budget! I love the illustrations in the Melinda Long Pirate books - we gave those to my nephews a few years ago. But I've got a new granddaughter now, so well-illustrated and well-written books are a must. Thanks for your recommendation!

    1. At least you can justify the purchase with a new granddaughter! Little kids are so fun to read to.

  3. David Shannon is a favorite in our school libraries as well, Stacie. Have you read Jangles? It came out in 2012 and may be a bit text heavy for Kindergarten but the illustrations are great. It could make an interesting prompt for telling their own fish stories.

  4. How cool that he writes and illustrates them! I haven't read a ton of his books but now think I want to, especially if he includes humor! Great write up!

  5. I love that you focused on this author, he has such fun books especially for young children. My daughter has one of his board books - actually the first book she knew by heart. I love his other books as they are great reads for Preschool/Early Elementary!! I may have to do a post similar to this so we can get a collection of books for this age range :)

    1. I would love to see another post of books for this age range. I might have a little book hoarding addiction to children's literature.
